Rebecca shot a warm, if mildly worried, smile in her patient's direction. She had confidence in her skills: she hadn't graduated college and joined STARS as a field medic by the time most people graduated high school to think she didn't know her stuff. Still, there was always a little bit of the unknown when you started experimenting. Rebecca surveyed the concoction she'd ground up on her bedroom table, checking things over for the final time.
"I've made plenty of medicine from herbs before with just field supplies, but this isn't exactly the Arklay Mountains...the plants I've found growing in gardens around here might have entirely different properties. You won't die, and I'm certain there'll be no painful or deleterious side effects, so you don't have to worry about anything like that. This is research - we need to find out what the plants around here can do."
She cast a look around the room. Finding a muted, homey sort of apartment in the hotel was always tricky, but she had managed. She had her little book-filled nook with a sunny window, a comfortable bed piled with blankets, and a simple kitchen and bathroom. She'd even found someone she considered trustworthy enough to test this new medicine on, just to have something to do that wasn't just sex...though considering her track record of people she considered trustworthy, she might have made a bad call. Puffing out a breath, Rebecca tapped the powdery mixture into a pill capsule, fastened it, and handed it over with a glass of water.
"Go ahead." Rebecca steps back and takes a seat on the edge of her bed, watching closely. "Take it, then tell me how you feel."
Once you swallow the pill...
